Seriously?

Here's the most ridiculous sentence I have read and am supposed to understand so far:

"Side chain oxidation at the number 5 carbon atom of the benzene ring to yield carboxylic acid is the most important initial step in terminating pharmacologic activity of barbituates by metabolism."
