Hurricane

  • Pre-hurricane weather is H-U-M-I-D. Makes other days I've complained about here seem Colorado, desert-dry.
  • It's eerily quiet everywhere
  • 7:30 pm: My friend called to tell me she was told to evacuate her apartment that is 5 blocks from mine
  • We both decided not to evacuate and here's why: I don't see why a school that is down the street from me will be any safer than my apartment. The school is not any safer from floods than my house is. I'm scared of the Katrina stories from New Orleans and I hesitate to be stuck in a large, closed building with a bunch of strangers.
  • 8:00 pm: The news just told me I'm under a tornado watch, but I'm from Colorado and not scared of tornadoes
  • 8:04 pm: The news just showed me that Bridgeport is in the path of the eye of the storm. I am scared of that, for sure.
  • 8:08pm It's officially getting windy and raining more because I can hear it. OMG!!!
  • The news also told me it's not IF the power goes off, it's WHEN. Oy-vey.
Side note: I never thought I would say anything like this because I really never thought I would live so close to New York. But, I can only get New York news stations with my new cable TV. Which, on a normal day makes me feel kind of cool, but today, when I need to know about what is happening in CONNECTICUT, so I can know if I need to EVACUATE or am going to FLOOD, I have no TV access to local TV channels. ANNOYING.

Big Week

Well, this has been a big week in Bridgeport, CT.

  1. There was some sort of earthquake in Virginia (?) that ROCKED the east coast! Except I didn't feel it, and no one I know felt it. But, I think that makes me an earthquake survivor.
  2. I finished my first semester of anesthesia school! And I officially got straight A's!!!
  3. There's going to be a hurricane here tonight and tomorrow. So, by Monday, I will be an earthquake survivor AND a hurricane survivor.
Big Stuff.

So, I took some before pictures of my neighborhood just in case. I guess Irene is supposed to be Category 1 when she gets here, so that means 75-95 MPH winds. I mean, that's hardcore winds! My neighborhood association thinks that the power will go out for sure, and I'm sure winds that strong will knock down a lot of the giant trees around. I haven't heard anything about evacuating, and I think I am far enough back from the coast line to not get the tidal swell. They are predicting 6-10 inches of rain though, so there may be some flooding. My building is built pretty well though in relation to floods. My windows are really high off the ground, and there are no apartments in the basement. I'm going to stick it out in my apartment unless it gets really bad.

Here are my pictures:

My landlord recently cut down some trees and hasn't been able to remove the giant stumps yet. It will be interesting to see if the power of mother nature will move them around during the storm.

This is a picture of the street and all the trees. Also a picture of the side of my building where my apartment is. I'm hoping none of the trees land in my windows!

This is my entertainment and food stash for 3 days, per my instructions from the hurricane reports. The instructions specifically said 3 bottles of wine and 3 bags of cookies. It's true.

So, I'll keep you posted and take some after pictures!

Oh goodness, the Lunatic neighbor is in a mood this afternoon...I'm hoping she doesn't choose tonight to throw a huge fit at 530am. I have a test tomorrow.

Oy, I can't get away from the crazies!!

Testing: Round 3

Well, my third and final round of tests for the summer 2011 semester are coming up this week. I am excited/shocked/can't believe I'm already (almost) done with one semester of anesthesia school! Plus, I think I will be an official straight A student for the semester! How great is that?

I have this odd end of semester-itis though, and no real motivation to study right now. But I will because it would be real, real dumb to not study and not complete the semester with as much work as I started with. Ok, I'm going to quit blogging and go study now. :)
